When my son Nicholas was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, he was no longer going to be able to go to school.  He and I decided that we would start working on an R2D2 astromech and use it as a project to learn robotics.  As it turned out, the chemo has been too hard on him and he very quickly lost interest in the project.  But for me working on it became therapy to keep my mind active and a way to escape all of the horrors that were going on in our lives right now with his treatment.  In spending so much time at the children’s hospital, I also go to see how any kind of distraction for the kids at the hospital really made a big difference in their day, so I decided that the primary purpose of this R2D2 going to be visiting children’s hospitals to cheer up the kids.

The R2 unit is built from scraps that I had around in my workshop and cut on our CNC machine with many of the details printed out in 3D by my older son, Andy.
